Vertica promises you the world
So I just read a little about Vertica (off of slashdot) - which is a “grid-enabled, column-oriented relational database management system”. I don’t know much about it but I read anything that promises me 100x performance with several salt grains. I hope that they really will provide what they promise (hardware savings all around!), but alas, I am a firm believer in no free lunches and if they achieve 100x performance, I’m wondering what they sacrificed to get it. Remember object relational databases? No? Right.

In his DBMS 2 blog, Curt Monash is reporting that Vertica will soon announce some impressive benchmarks.

So time may tell.
Since they built Vertica “from the ground up,” they may not have sacrificed anything to get performance. We’ll see.

Thanks for the pointer! I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes open. I’d love to see this thing be the greatest thing since sliced bread and perhaps it will, but even in that article the author suggest there could be some drawbacks. I suspect that Vertica, if living up to its hype, will be unbelievable for some purposes and less good for others.
