So, I found the AppleInsider piece on the macbook mini rumor (courtesy of kirkunit). I really have no historical love for any of Apple’s laptops (apparently I’m alone in this lack) - there’s very few laptops I really feel attached to and those are probably the Thinkpad 701 (the butterfly which I coveted but never owned) and my little fujitsu lifebook P1120 (which is super awesome, great battery life, decent keyboard and very importantly a touch screen). The thing that I took away from that article, other than increased hope for the long overdue subnotebook from Apple is this:

Plans reportedly call for the notebook to be the first of the company’s MacBook offerings to utilize the solid-state memory in order to improve power efficiency and facilitate near instantaneous boot times. This feature, however, had not been frozen upon last check.

First, in and of itself, this would be great. Smaller, faster, more energy efficient, quieter, more robust, I’ll sacrifice a little harddrive space for that. It also lends a little credibility to the idea that ipods will be moving towards a lineup with increased usage of the larger sized solid state drives. I hoped for it a little while ago and this raises those hopes. If Apple moves into this space as a market leader, I think it’ll drive down costs and increase the development of larger solid state disks.

If they come out with a subnotebook that’s got a small footprint and is around 2lbs, I’ll definitely be picking one up. My fingers are certainly crossed.
