Update 4: I think I’m going to go with Ruby. And by think, I’m going to grab some books read them and if I’m still psyched about it I’ll start my project. If I’m not psyched, I may switch to PHP. Now I must find some books… suggestions welcome.

Update 3: Everytime I start leaning towards PHP, I come across some article that makes me think again. Are these problems going to be solved? Is the core PHP language simply too big? Is mod_lisp the one true way?

Update 2: There’s a pretty nice dialogue going on in the comments, I’m still conflicted about what new language to pick up. Steve threw in LISP, which I know and did a little refresher course last year but as much love as I have for it, don’t think I want to do. Any additional thoughts are welcomed.

Update: Has the quest ended already? Just read this blog about more PHP5 vulnerabilities and it’s tempered my enthusiasm. Would I be better served working with Ruby? I’ve about as much Ruby experience as PHP and I actually liked that experience (as opposed to PHP, with which working involved much wailing and gnashing of teeth). But is Ruby just a flash in the pan with all the Rails hype? Or will it live beyond? More thinking to do.

So I was sitting around the other day thinking about how totally awesome I am when a thought comes to me… I should learn PHP! As a perl developer, I’ve dabbled in PHP and have my opinions (it isn’t my cup of tea) but perhaps … *gasp* … I’m wrong and everyone else is right and PHP is the bomb. It turns out there’s a site I want to build, pretty simple and maybe I can use it as a testbed to do some in depth PHP work and jQuery development, both of which I’ve used only briefly. This story will start with the quest for a book, as all good stories do. And thus begins my journey of discovery.
