Apple Should Start a VC Arm
Just ran across this BusinessWeek article (courtesy TUAW) that suggests that Apple should take a little slice of it’s $12billion and use it to start a little venture capital arm to invest in Apple development startups. Apple’s definitely not a big acquisition company - they buy small innovative companies that they can easily incorporate into the Apple culture. On the other hand, Apple’s lacking a bit in the big software department - spreading a little love into this space could really give them a boost. With lots of new platforms to develop for (ipod, apple tv and iphone) there’s a lot of space for some really cool stuff to happen - supporting these developers means apple can ensure that it does and if the popularity of the ipod is any indicatation at least some of these ventures will be wildly successful bringing in a nice profit to the mother company. Apple wins at both ends of the deal. I think it’s a pretty interesting idea, the article’s definitely worth a read.
