Breakfast Links: Criterion, Panties and Hammer
If you like movies and you like dvd’s, check out The Criterion Contraption. One man’s mission to watch and review each of the Criterion discs. I only have most of the Kurosawa discs in my collection, but they’re great. And this guy’s reviews are pretty serious, a ton of effort goes into it and if you’ve got the time and inclination, it’s worth checking out. And he doesn’t hate Rushmore, which is always a good sign.
Now check out this article on a Tokyo panty thief. I have so many questions! Did he lay them out in his pad like that or did the police go in and lay them out. If the former, did he have a huge pad with a special panty room? If the latter, why?? Did he steal multiple pieces from each place? I guess really that question is, was there an overriding theme to his stealing? One piece per home? Or was it simply whichever ones he liked best? Did he go through phases? A blue phase? Did he reminisce over them? I’m completely fascinated by obsession like this.
Lastly, file this under, “wha??” So it turns out Justin Lin (director of “Better Luck Tomorrow“) would not have been able to make his movie without the help of … Hammer? Apparently they met at a Studio while Justin was looking at gear for the movie and they started talking - which culminated in Hammer saying to call him if Justin needed anything. Well it turns out two years later, Justin’s out of money , out of credit and not done with the movie, calls Hammer and voila Hammer wires him the money. No contract, no nothing, he might not even have remembered who Justin was. Hot damn! Thanks, Hammer! I loved that movie!

Hammer? Really? I thought he was bankrupt or something. Or was this before he became bankrupt? Or did he make a comeback?

Heh.. I saw that panty thief article too and was wondering the same thing.. How’d the police determine who got assigned to inventory duty? Were orders given to fold and arrange them neatly by type of garment, or did officers on scene take the initiative?
Anyway, still haven’t seen that movie. Maybe after Tokyo Drift first.

Hammer. Don’t hurt ‘em! Yeah I don’t know anything about Hammer’s financial status. I’m just glad he had enough to front Justin the money. :)
I haven’t seen Tokyo Drift, I didn’t even realize that it was Justin Lin. I did secretly want to see it, though. Heh!

Well the Japanese are generally a pretty orderly lot so I have no doubt someone had orders to arrange them all neat and stuff. From what I can tell of the scene in the picture, I don’t think that’s the thief’s room, it looks more like some room at official police HQ. It’s like when the police here make one of their periodic huge drug busts or whatnot and display the seized stash for the media. It’s all show.
