This short techdirt piece is worth reading. It has always stunned me when people and organizations fight to stay out of google, or feel that google owes them something. A stunning amount of traffic is driven to sites by google, companies are fighting tooth and nail to show higher on the results pages and some people feel that Google owes them something for it. Can you imagine how useful the web would be if search engines went away, or if search engines had to pay content providers for access to their content (which amounts to largely the same thing as search engines going away)? Yeah, not very.

I hope Sam Zell lives by his words and takes the Tribune’s content out of google. I’d love to see how he fares with that. Anyhow, read that techdirt piece, it’s short and sums it all up. And here’s some more reporting on the deal.
