Remembering Buffy
So I was watching the cables last night and I don’t really remember what it was, maybe some commercial, but it had me thinking about Cibo Matto and Cibo Matto always makes me think about Buffy. Cibo Matto is fairly directly responsible for my love of that show.
Let me ’splain you. I have a theory that when the music/score in a show (or movie) is really well chosen and great, if you are on the fence about said show, it behooves you to give it a second and closer look because I’ve discovered more often than not for whatever reason if they can make the sound really work for them (and not just be a neutral experience) the director is often really great. I had seen a couple partial episodes of Buffy prior to the Season 2 premier (titled “When She was Bad”) and was pretty on the fence about it, I just hadn’t been interested it a cheerleader show. You really need to pay attention to the show to realize that it was very conciously and awesomely walking that fine line between cool and cheesy.
So, I think I sat down to watch all of the second season premier and when the scene featuring Cibo Matto at the bronze came on, I was like, what? I can’t believe that this is on network television, how cool is this? And its the scene where Buffy goes on and with a single dance completely destroys the three people that are closest to her, it was a totally brilliant and incredibly shot scene. From that point on, I was hooked.
The Sugar Water video (by Michel Gondry) is stunning as is the scene (below) from Buffy, although it will be less cool if you don’t know the characters very well. All VodPod’d up.
