Pet Food Recall
UPDATE2: Check out The Green Guide’s recommendations.
UPDATE: Check out the ASPCA’s recommendations on how to deal with this. Read the whole thing if you’ve got a cat or a dog, but here’s something to take note of right away:
Based on information made public by the FDA this week, the ASPCA recommends that you should not feed your pet any foods containing wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate. There are several high quality foods available that do not contain these ingredients, so please ask your veterinarian for an alternative recommendation.
So Ben posted this thing about a pet food recall that I hadn’t heard about. Apparently China isn’t the place you want your food to originate. I did a little more poking around, being a pet owner and found that this recall was pretty widespread affecting even respected brands like Iams, Eukanuba, Nutro and Science Diet (you can grab a spreadsheet of the known affected brands here).
The ASPCA is urging you to keep an eye on your pet as the effects of the melamine (which is what is causing the recall) can be dangerous for your pets, especially your cats. If he’s been having any difficulties lately you might want to bring him to the vet and get it checked out.
It’s also worth thinking about maybe switching to one of the goody-two-shoes natural brands like Pet Guard, Wysong, Natural Life or any of an ever growing group. Whiskers pet store in the village is a great place to shop in person or online. Did that sound like an ad? Sorry… but really it is, I get all my canned food and catnip toys from them and if you go there they’ll cheerfully indoctrinate you into the pros of natural food and care for your pet.
