UPDATE: Ungullible commenter Max Hubris called it. Sadly this is all a hoax, snopes says so. There is no more easter bunny for me.

Yet another country falls prey to the oldest trick in the book, the poodle scam (care of tokyomango). Thousands of japanese were shocked too learn that the bargain basement poodles they’d purchased from Poodles as Pets were actually sheep. In that position I’d be more shocked to learn that I couldn’t tell the difference between a dog and a sheep, but that’s me. Apparently, ignorance was bliss for awhile as they happily went through life with their new pet. Some clues started stacking up, though..

One couple said they became suspicious when they took their “dog” to have its claws trimmed and were told it had hooves.

Yes… that is suspicious. Also the fact that it was a sheep might have tipped them off. But the coup de grace for this nefarious deed happened on a talk show:

The scam was uncovered when Japanese moviestar Maiko Kawamaki went on a talk-show and wondered why her new pet would not bark or eat dog food.

She was crestfallen when told it was a sheep.

And with that the jig was totally up, everybody wised to the scam. God, I wish I could have been the one to tell her.

This is so crazy on so many levels. First off, how do you even come up with the idea to sell sheep off as poodles? I mean, really, how do you come to that plan? Obviously, it’s a great idea since thousands of people bought into it. Which brings us to the next craziness, how is it possible that thousands of people can’t figure out that they are buying sheep? It’s not like they’re even in the same general region of the animal kingdom… it’s not like not knowing the difference between an italian greyhound and a whippet, the mistaking of which one could be forgiven. Thirdly, and really the most pressing in my mind… are sheeps good pets? Cause they are really damn cute. And then you can say sheeps all the time. “Oh these? These are my sheeps, that one’s Jane and the one gnawing on the couch over there is Mr. Fonzarelli Quiltybum, Esq.”
