Fanboys shaping up!
No, I’m not saying that geeks everywhere are flocking to their gyms… it seems that there have been several goings on with the Fanboys movie (heading to a theater near you on August 17th). The stirring tale of a group of people who are on a quest to see Episode 1 at Skywalker Ranch before it’s release. All this to fulfill the last wish of their dying friend. Brings a tear to the eye, no?
As if that plot wasn’t enough to hook you, apparently they’ve been showing the movie around a little bit and it’s been getting a warm reception (via sfsignal). So warm in fact that Kevin Smith writes, directs and stars in one scene of the movie. Even bad ol’ George Lucas gets some points (not too many, we don’t forgive past transgressions) for hooking them up with original sound effects from the movies that they adding into Fanboys.
While I won’t say I’m excited to see the movie… there is some feeling there… vertigo? hunger? sleepiness? Not sure. Maybe I’ll round up some of the boys and force them to see it with me. Get it? Force? ehhh….
Watch the trailer if you’re so inclined, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to be roped into seeing this with me - may as well get used to it.

That’s what I’m talking about! I think that guy who was in both Trekkies makes his appearance as a… trekkie. Right?

I’ll see it. Hell, when the original Star Wars (Episode IV) came out, I was in high school. I went to see it about a dozen times. There had never been anything like it before. Seriously, the other major movies of the time were depressing post-Vietnam pictures: The Deer Hunter, Coming Home; or hideous chick flicks: Annie Hall, The Goodbye Girl.
Star Wars changed the way we thought about movies and raised the bar for generations.

It certainly did! Yeah, I’ve seen Episode IV more times than I care to admit (although not in the theaters, sadly).
Plus being of the more nerdly persuasion, I totally understand the questing instinct. While I wouldn’t say I’ve done anything near so dramatic, there’ve been many times I’ve need to travel far and wide in search of something that might seem…. silly to the outside observer. :)
