Otaku dreams come true at Maid Cafes
This is pretty old news, but I just came across it, so leave me alone about it. Jeez. But check it - here’s a report about the trend of Maid Cafes that started in Akihabara, Tokyo and is spreading to more places and more than just cafe’s. They talk about bars and places to get leg massages as the latest in the maid invasion.
They’re cafe’s where all the staff are cute ladies who dress up like maids (olde style or new mini-skirt style) and treat you like you’re the master of the house returning home. Obviously, this is something we can all get behind, know? :)
The video is reported by this white guy who is just a little too into the scene. And by just a little I mean, way too much. Check out these choice quotes:
An intensive treatment from a cute girl with all the trimmings, it doesn’t matter that she hasn’t been trained in the art of massage for very long, her soft hands have a healing touch that can make any tired otaku happy.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to the maids, they really bring a twist to the whole customer service relationship.
The sky is the limit! Anyhow there’s two videos to the report and they’re both a bit creepy. One creepy part is the “games” that are on the menu. You order a game and a maid busts out this alligator game that’s like for a 2 year old where it’s a big alligator head and you take turns pushing down a tooth, at some point it makes the mouth shut and that person loses. That’s the game. Seriously. If the maid loses she squeals appropriately.
Word up. Watch the videos.

Heh… I can actually match some of the costumes to the shops. How sad is that?
If you think maid cafes are odd, Akihabara’s first butler cafe just opened. That’s females crossdressing as bishounen (pretty boys) catering to females. There are other butler cafes, but otome (girl otakus) tend to hang out in a different district.

That’s wierd, indeed. And I didn’t know girl otakus got a different word!
It’s funny that the thing targetting women still is staffed by women. Heh!

Yeah, it caught me by surprise when I followed a sign for this well-known manga shop down into the basement. After my eyes adjusted to pink everywhere, I noticed that there were only females in the store (from teens to 40s). Then, I noticed that maybe most of the end displays were devoted to “boys’ love.” (Yeah, it’s what you think it is — to a degree, anyway)
I then realized this area, where I’d shopped during a previous visit, had now become the notorious “Otome Road.”
