Hey, so I have been extremely not-excited for the Bionic Woman remake, simply because it just didn’t seem interesting. But I mosey’d on over to scifichick’s posting on it (where she has some youtubes of the pilot) where several things were duly discovered.

First of all, Starbuck’s in the pilot! So you know that’s awesome. A little supplementary searching reveals a few more chunky bits about it. David Eick who is fully one half of the producers of Battlestar Galactica (which you know is my favourite television show) is also the mastermind behind the show. Ok, so it wasn’t a few and was just one chunk, but it’s a good one, no?

So with all that, let’s colour me excited to check out the new show. Here’s why I hesitate to give it my fully unqualified excitement. Where BSG was an examination of thinking in a post 9-11 world, the Bionic Woman professes to:

explore the role of professional women in contemporary society and how they juggle their various roles.

Now I have nothing against professional women in contemporary society, but I wonder if that makes for an exciting show. I worry that this turns into Bionic McBeal or perhaps Bionic in the City. I suspect that somewhere in that sentence was some sort of sexism, but I don’t mean there to be - I’m just saying that a metaphor for military, political and popular interaction after 9-11 seems like a much more science-fictiony starting point.

But who knows, I’m sure Eick knows better than me, so I’ll definitely be checking out the show. You ought to check out the pilots on scifichick’s post.

UPDATE: You know I might be getting weak in my old age, but I found the clips for Chuck pretty funny, too.

UPDATE 2: Huh, here’s some more clips - and they’re not on the youtubes so the quality is a bit better. The hospital one’s pretty good. And it turns out she has a deaf sister. Oh and she took some krav maga classes - why’s the always the one they take?
