Breakfast Links: UK, Drobo & Death Star
What the hell is wrong with the UK? They really hate their citizens, it started with the loud speaker cctv’s nagging them when they did something wrong, it moved to adding in some lip reading software to those cctv’s for easier spying and now? All those cctv’s can take to the sky with these police run remote control drones. They’ll be outfitted with night vision cameras and, presumably loudspeakers and lip reading, tranquilizer guns is the next logical step. Seriously, what the hell?
So you know I’ve been idly casting about for some kind of big storage system, right? Well, I’d come across drobo before, but now it seems to have become an actual thing. I was this close to getting it - since you can load it with drives of all different sizes and it does some kind of wierd RAID to make sure you don’t lose data if drives fail and you can always increase the size since all the drives don’t have to be the same size. Perfect, right? Wrong… sigh. Seems it has a bit of a noise problem. Sad, I really was about to get one.
Oh, and check it - there’s a new concept design for a convention center in the United Arab Emirates. OMA has decided that a convention center ought to look as much like the Deathstar as possible! How awesome is that? I can think of a few cons that fit right into the Deathstar, although, travel to the UAE might be slightly prohibitive. Still, it’d be worth it, no? I’d wager more than a few Storm Troopers would make the trek!

Drobo looks pretty nifty. Wait for version 2.0 I guess. ;-p Although it’d be nicer if they NAS’d it.

Yeah, maybe. But 1.0 just came out of beta, 2.0 could be awhile away. Sad, it sounded so good, the video was pretty sweet. And with airport extreme, everything’s NAS, no? :)

Hmm… that might be worth checking into to see if it will actually work with AE. I have my doubts but it’d be a pleasant surprise if it did.
