Breakfast Links: 2nd Gen iPhone?, Union Square Mazes & Paul McCartney
Huh, so the iPhone obviously isn’t even out yet but there’s now rumors of the 2nd gen iPhones, perhaps to be released in September! The rumor suggests that Quanta (who apparently already build MacBooks and iPods) will build the next one with an initial 5 million shipping. The rumor further suggests that the next one will “be similar in function to those from Foxconn but with a different outer design to fit different marketsâ€. Which to me sounds more like 1.5G vs a full-blown 2G. Qanta itself blurbs about it, seems to admit to a 2nd G in September although it doesn’t admit to being the company to actually be delivering it. Either way, I’m going to try to hold out until the iPhone that hits after the phones have been in the hands of the world for a bit - this will be difficult if the iPhone lives up to it’s hype as my Treo 650, love it as I may, is beginning to kill me.
If you’ve been to NYC and Union Square in specific you’ve seen the painted mazes on the asphalt at the north end of the park. Well it turns out those were painted by Diana Carulli and they are about to be painted over in a redesign of that area of the park. To be honest, I never really got them, I actually assumed they’d been painted by some elementary school outing or something and I don’t think I’d miss them terribly if they were gone. But I do worry about any redesigning going on there - it’s a big wide open paved area of the sort you rarely see in NYC and if they build anything on it, I think it’ll be a loss to the area. Keepin’ my fingers crossed.
And lastly we have the new video for Paul McCartney’s song Dance Tonight. It has all the hallmarks of a good video - that is, directed by Michel Gondry and starring Natalie Portman - unfortunately it’s pretty insipid. At no point does the song make me want to dance. I don’t even love the video, although, I’m pretty sure i saw a black and white slimer in there. I did a little more digging around and found that all those ghosts were actually done in camera using an old magician’s trick which is remarkably cool. I love Gondry’s lo-fi work, but while I like the technique, the video kinda falls flat for me.
