Aiight. You know I digs me some online tests, especially the kind where you get some kind of numeric grade at the end. I also have been wanting to play that nintendo DS game Brain Age, so I could see how old I am, right? Enter lumosity (beta) - which tries to measure your cognitive abilities as well as provide some sort of “brain fitness program” to keep the juices flowing up there.

I don’t know nothin’ about no brain fitness thing, I just wanted to take the test and find out my LumosIQ. Which turns out to be 118 - only average. Obviously there’s a flaw in the system, since my IQ by any measure should be well into the stratospheric zone. You can tell my IQ by the big words I use. I got a 102 on the attention test, 137 on the memory and 115 on the processing speed.

The test is actually quite cool. My favourite was the first one, the birdwatching test, where it flashes a letter in the middle of the screen and a bird somewhere on the screen at the same time. You then have to click on where the bird was and if you hit it and remember the letter you get to fill out a word, hangman style. It took a couple tries to figure it out, but once I did it was strangely satisfying.

Then there was the crazy maze test where they would flash in series monsters on this grid, and then they’d put your guy and and flower on the grid and you’d have to walk your way to the flower w/out hitting any of the (now hidden) monsters. If you made it they’d ask you to remember where a monster of a particular color was and you’d get bonus points for remembering. It’s easy while it’s on the small board, but when they jumped the size, my brain ceased functioning.

And the last one was the math test, which I sadly did very poorly at. It turns out you have to answer them in the order they fall (there are several on the screen at once) so don’t think you can just skip ahead.

You should give it a shot. Maybe you’ll beat my score, thus proving the inherent flaws in the test. Or maybe you won’t reaffirming my superiority. Sucka.

I tried again a few hours later and now I’m at 133 (112/138/150), sadly stlil average. You can also sign up for their beta brain training program (free for now) which unleashes a whole bunch new and fun tests to take. I’m sure 8 year olds would rock at all these, by my olde reflexes can definitely use a little stretching. It’s good times, give it a shot.
