Mini review: Shrek the Third
Shrek. I grudgingly liked the first one a fair bit and was even more surprised to find that I liked the second one as well. So I went into the Third one half thinking they’d keep rolling on and I’d love it and half thinking that there was no way they could keep it up. I was excited to see it pretty much on the strength of that part of the trailer where Gingerbread Man poops a candy button. (but I’m like that, it just takes one little thing in a trailer to hit me and I’ll want to see the movie - I mean I saw Starship Troopers because of the “woo hoo” song in the commercial)
My executive summary is that on the felix scale of 0 to 10, I give it a 6 - completely neutral. I didn’t dislike it, there wasn’t anything particularly bad about it, the problem is that there wasn’t anything particularly good about it either. There definitely were moments and characters that were really well done. The animated trees were great, and I always like Donkey and Puss, and Gingy, of course.
Overall, though, the movie was pretty flat. Alot of the same, brand placement disguised as an anachronism everywhere which, you know, was funny for the first two movies, but is kinda obvious and tired now. And there’s sooo many characters and so much happening that the movie is too all over the place and you never really care about Shrek who comes off as a whiny ogre. I think one problem is that the story got too big, the previous stories were pretty small and followed Shrek around very closely, this one is almost epic in comparison and I think suffers for it.
