Breakfast Links: Million Counter, Bike Boxes & 10 Commandments for Drivers
We all know that the interwebs are where stupid crap lives. Nay, more than lives, prospers. So here’s the latest specimen I’ve come across - this dude has decided that he’s going to count to 1 million, put it on the internet and sell advertising and t-shirts. If all goes well and he doesn’t go insane or anything he believes it’ll take him all slummer of 16 hour counting days. He’s selling sponsorships on ebay for 1000 blocks of numbers. His other schtick is that half of his income will go to charity (specifically Push America). Like I said, the interwebs are where stupid crap lives.
Now, as anyone who’s biked in NYC knows, it isn’t the most biker friendly city there is - despite lots of lip service it remains a fairly dangerous place to bike. Slowly, though, very slowly, things are changing. These new Bike Boxes are the latest thing I’ve seen that’s a good change for NYC bikers. They paint off a big chunk of road in front of cars so that bikers can start first and more safely make turns. I hope the city does more of this sort of thing - more bike lanes please!
And we close with the newly issued Ten Commandments for Drivers from the Vatican. You didn’t know they needed any more commandments - to me it seems to dilute the impact of the original commandments, but who knows. They give these gems:
1. You shall not kill.
Hey! Isn’t that copying or plagiarism or something?
3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.
8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.
9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.
Can anyone explain what any of those mean?

In Americanese:
3. Learn defensive driving and leave your guns in the glove compartment.
8. If you run over someone, don’t drive away. It’s possible you may not be at fault for crushing their legs.
9. Pedestrians, bikers and Segways have the right of way.
