Somebody explain me some Alexa
Ok, so I wrote almost two weeks ago some wierd numbers I was seeing on Alexa. I was able to follow or at least my brain thought it was able to make sense of the “reach” number which seemed to fluctuate roughly in step with my actual traffic. That is, it was generally gently rising while my traffic was and gently descending when it wasn’t. But the pages per visitor got itself on some rocket trajectory, peaking when I wrote that piece at 45.5 pages per visitor.
That was clearly and obviously crazy. However, pretty much immediately after that post the pages per visit number dropped drastically and is now hovering around 6-7 pages. I’m not saying someone read my blog and changed something, I’m more than sure that even if this blog was important enough to warrant such action, it would actually not be possible to move that quickly. I just don’t understand what’s happening with it. I wish some explanation was forthcoming about this. At any rate, even this 6-7 pages business is not very likely, but within my realm of conception.
I guess it’s things like this that show why no one really respects Alexa numbers very much. Someone should do something more statistically sound to get at these numbers. You know, someone with lots of PhD’s working for them.
