Just to update Felix’s story on the impending iPhone update — the rumor was right that the update was coming soon. In fact, the update was available a few hours after everybody read about the rumor. Turns out it’s just some critical security fixes (specifically, the Safari flaw discovered by these guys) and not cool new functionality. Like MMS, or copy and paste, which would have been nice.

See the changes here.

Compare and contrast: With the Treo, you have to completely erase every bit of data on it before performing a firmware update, and then re-sync via the Palm Desktop software, if syncing actually still works for you. This is not for the light-hearted, and in the three times I did this with the Treos I’ve had over the years, it worked the first time once (the latest firmware update, the ill-fated 700p MR, actually destroyed my Treo). With the iPhone, iTunes updates the firmware like it does with an iPod, the iPhone reboots, and everything is cool.

Update^3: iPhoneFreak has the skinny.
