Breakfast Links: Daleks, Unlawful Reincarnation & Telephony
Exterminate! Exteeeeerminate! Well the Manchesterians went for the gusto, trying to break the world record of largest number of people dressed up as Daleks in one location! Apparently there’s still no official decision on whether this actually broke the record, but I’m holding my breath. Someone has uploaded several videos from the event - they’re a little long and could use some editing and a good score, but in that first one about 2 minutes 30 seconds in, there’s a baby in her Dalek roller - I wonder if she counted as a full Dalek! I don’t remember any 2 foot tall daleks from the show, but I could be wrong. :)
This really isn’t even a little funny, it’s mostly just unbelievable. China has made it illegal for Buddhist monks to reincarnate without government permission. First, that’s insane. Second it’s just a bid to try and get a grip on the next Dalai Lama. But the current Dalai Lama has already said he won’t reincarnate in Tibet - apparently Dalai Lama’s have had the ability to control where they reincarnet for centuries. Huh. Still, this is completely insane. Even weirder? A quarter of US Christians believe in reincarnation. Wait, what? Don’t Christians believe in heaven?
And there’s all sorts of telephony news happening. The news I’m most excited for is that Sprint has officially announced that NYC is going to get WiMax next year (Sprint calls it XOHM). Sadly, according to the article it doesn’t come till end of 2008, which probably means 2009. Their marketing plan is pretty awesome, too, selling it more like an ISP than a cellphone company. Also the webs are abuzz with rumors of Google’s mobile phone to be announced soon. The emerging consensus is that it’s a linux based OS with integration with all the Google apps and hardware built by HTC. I would be completely ready to not be interested in this at all (the goal will be integration with google apps, not consumer satisfaction) but they’ve got the guy who started Danger (you know the Sidekick guys) on the job, so who knows.
