Robotech to the big screen
UPDATE: Huh, I just saw a google ad on the right that brought me to this page where you can see that they’re playing a few anime on the big screen for one day only. I haven’t seen Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles or Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie: Conqueror of Shambala - anyone into it? They’re on the 19th and 20th of September. Huh, I actually went to one of their other shows, the Beastie night.
Saw this on Ben’s blog first - Warner Bros has apparently picked up the feature rights to Robotech! That’s pretty interesting, it looks like Tobey Maguire is producing it and may decide to play Rick Hunter. I think that’s a pretty decent fit - Rick has that sort of innocence that Peter Parker has and Maguire plays quite well. The only problem is that I think Rick Hunter was like 18 or something and Tobey’s in his 30’s. But I guess that’s Hollywood.
Anyhow, I’m way more interested in this adaptation than I am in the Voltron one. Boy I loved Robotech growing up - I remember when I first saw it, it kind of blew my mind. At a time when G.I. Joe would show all out battle scenes with tons of people blowing things up but still every blown up airplane had a guy parachuting to safety and nobody ever really getting hurt, this show had Rick’s older brother dieing. The plot seems movieable - although I wonder how they’ll condense the whole season into a single movie. I also wonder who they’ll get to play Lynn Minmei. Hmm… I guess we’ll see.
Transformers, Speed Racer, Voltron? What’s next? Hmm… it’d be interesting to see Starblazers or Thundercats, but I’m guessing G.I. Joe..

Huh! Cool. I was wondering how they were going to make a Thundercats live action… and now I know. They aren’t! :)
2010? Seems so far off!

I want to see them use the same hairstyle that they had in the anime for the live action Robotech. That would be pretty sweet. ;-)
As for the two movies you were thinking of seeing, I wouldn’t advise seeing Fullmetal cause it doesn’t have the same impact if you haven’t watched the series beforehand. The series (and the movie) is superb though. As for the Robotech one, I dunno, could be interesting although it’ll probably be dubbed. =p Even though it has Mark Hamill, I’m not sure if that’s really a drawing point. ;-p

For real, I tried for years to cultivate that hair style. Not easy. ;)
I guess I won’t see those movies. Jerk. :)

Let me know if you do want to see them. I might go just to get back into anime. ive dropped the ball for a while now.
Also, Mark Hamill is an excellent voice actor. He played the best joker on the batman animated series (the first good one).

Maybe - I might see the Robotech if I get some company. :) We’ll reconvene next week and see how things look.
