Batman/Gotham TypographyIt must be typography week! Or at least typography monday and tuesday - following up my li’l review of Helvetica came across these links. The first is this guy that did a logo study on the progression of the Batman logo over time (via sfsignal). It changed a lot over time, but you can definitely see the thread in there. And in a case of awesome font nerdery - Hoefler & Frere-Jones discovered that their Gotham font could not handle the odd accents in bad guy Rā’s al GhÅ«l’s name - so they added them into a new edition of the font!

Now you know I like my falafel - I’m a Rainbow and Mamoun’s kinda guy. Although, I am also incredibly lazy and have recently been a Chickpea kinda guy, since it’s the closest. But now someone is saying I’ve been missing out this whole time and that some contender named Taim is actually the best falafel in NYC. Huh. I’ll have to go and investigate. Anyone know of this place? Here’s a link to NYMag’s 7 favourite’s - Taim also does not appear on that list.

I was looking over some of the Freakonomics blog the other day and came across this bit on the payment of NYPD officers - in this case, it brings it up in startling comparison with panhandlers. Check out the quote (Tommy is a homeless guy giving the cop some information):

I handed Tommy some money, he held up his hands and said, “C’mon, Eddie, you don’t have to, it’s okay.” I said, “It’s all right, you guys work, you take risks for us, you should get paid.” He took the money, but he shook his head.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but I feel a little funny, since you guys pay out of your own pockets. Do you know how much we make out here, panhandling, during rush hour?’

“No, how much?”

“About a dollar a minute.”

“Oh.”

NYPD cops make less than homeless people. That goes well with a piece I’d read on the Gothamist looking at the high dropout rate of police recruits. They cited the low starting salary ($25k) and the low top out salary ($59k vs $100k in Suffolk County) as some of the reasons. Craziness.
