Breakfast Links: Wall-E, rsizr & Wired Subways
Ok, this is the first Pixar flick that I am actually interested to see… Wall-E. The trailer is up at Yahoo, go watch it. Then you gotta check out the film site - Buy n Large, which looks like some crazy corporate site of the future. It’s pretty great, from the privacy notice:
Buy n Large will also share your personal information when you respond to promotional materials from Buy n Large and authorize a third party to use your personal information for purposes such as, for example, sending you additional promotional materials that further obligate you (and your family) to receive additional promotional materials, providing you a product or service, or entering you in a contest, sweepstakes or game that will usually require a financial obligation on the part of the user.
Good times. You gotta admit that making a big budget animated film with no dialogue, or rather with dialogue comprised almost completely of beeps and boops R2 style is pretty darn hardcore. Check out the interview with Andrew Stanton, the director. N’est-ce pas? Oh, and Wall-E looks a lot like a super deformed Johnny 5.
And if you want to super deform your own pictures look no further than rsizr.com (via mefi). Using the techniques of energy and seam carving or whatever that means, these guys resize pictures not by scaling everything down, they do it by cutting out pixels while trying to remain true to the main feel of the picture. It’s pretty awesome - get over there and upload a picture and play around with it to see what I mean. S’awesome.
Totally unrelated is the fact that it appears that NYC subways are getting wired. Just the stations for now, although if it takes off can the tunnels be far behind? I’m really mixed about this, while I’m excited to be able to hit google reader while waiting for the train, I’m not psyched to be surrounded by people screaming at the top of their lungs chatting with their friends about their latest trip to the dermatologist. You know what I mean? That could wind up being very crazy driving.

I remember reading an article that slashdot highlighted about why the FAA has failed to complete the testing that, if successful, would clear mobile phone use for airplane cabins. The article suggested that the barriers weren’t technical or monetary, but that they didn’t WANT to complete them. The higher-ups were convinced that the testing would be a success and they didn’t want to sit next to the aforementioned dermatologist conversation on every flight. For once i’m with the government officials on this. Can we start a campaign suggesting that cellphones will crash subway trains?

Yeah, thank ye heavens that there’s no cell on planes. I mean, I wouldn’t mind a little hot wifi action, but please don’t allow people to shout into their phones the whole trip.
And we should definitely start that campaign. Let’s talk to straphangers.org. :)

This is the FIRST Pixar flick you’re interested to see? Do you hate puppies, too?

Flick looks good. Cell phones are bad enough in cars. The last 5 people I saw driving like a putz were either from Massachusetts or on a cell phone. Hang up and drive people.

Listen, lady. It won’t be the first one I’ve seen or the first one I’ve liked (if I like it) but it’s the first that I want to see. Wait! I lie! It’s the second, I wanted to see The Incredibles, too. :) See, the second.
Yeah, it turns out that even talking with a hands free doesn’t really help. But what’re you gonna do. People gotta chat. I’m sure I’d feel different if I had a car and drove all the time!
