Steve’s reality distortion fieldIt doesn’t matter how you decorate a piece of crap and talk about how good it smells and how delightful it is to the touch. It still is a piece of crap. Gizmodo is reporting that rather than an SDK coming down the pipe we’re getting Google Gears, more or less, for Safari. A mechanism to get offline storage for Safari on the iPhone.

This does nothing for the platform. Sure it makes some stuff more convenient especially if they allow things to add icons to the main page that take you directly there. But it doesn’t help at all for things like alternate mail clients, offline RSS readers or all sorts of really interesting stuff.

Offline storage just isn’t a substitute for real apps. No matter how much Steve wiggles his eyebrows and waves his watch in front of your eyes. I wish they’d just come out with an SDK, even if it isn’t a public one, but one they give to a few blessed developers. At least then we’d get some much needed functionality from someone. Sigh.

Hopefully the rumor is wrong and an SDK is still on the way.
