Apple SDK for iPhone (and iTouch) by February
UPDATE: Ok, so Apple’s going to have an event March 6 where they’ll drop iPhone SDK the roadmap. Looks like it’s delayed until March at least… that’s the rumor at least, but with less than a week left in February seems a reasonable one.
From the mouth of Steve to the harddrives of developers everywhere. He’s going to put an SDK out into developers’ hands by February. This will let them build native apps for the iPhone and iTouch. Apple, it’s very possible, may have just won.
He doesn’t specify, if that’ll be a public release or seeded to certain developers, it certainly sounds like it will be widely released. He cites security efforts as the cause of the delay, which seems more than reasonable to me.
This is pretty amazing, if it is actually a public SDK that anyone can get their hands on, I think it’s mildly over for both Palm and Sidekick. If this can get stronger Exchange support as well, then it may start eating into RIM’s lunch. Look at the effort and interest that was generated by the hackers breaking and entering into that forbidden garden. If that was the case before there was even a documented way to do it, imagine what it will be like when Steve hands you the keys to the gate.
It does seem that there’ll be a guard at the door, though:
We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.
I’m guessing there’ll be some certification process that apps will need to go through before they are allowed to work on the iPhone. In the best case, anyone can submit apps to this process and it doesn’t take a year to get approved or denied. That would really be great. I guess we’ll see. In any event, this notice seems much more positive than I would have expected. I’m psyched and remain really optimistic.
SNAP.

What about if it was kittens? Kittens. A pile of kittens with some baby bunnies in the mix.

it depends on the ratio of bunnies to kittens. still, they better be some cuuuuute kittens.
