Google’s enduring love
Well, a specific portion of the webnet is talking about the latest big change to Google’s ranking algorithms that seem to have spanked many of the most prominent websites. You, my valued ad-clicking reader, will be relieved… relieved to know that the pagerank of this very site stands firm at a modest, but increasingly interesting 5.
Clearly Google saw all the drivel that “journalistic” sites like Slate and the Seattle Times, now banished to a mere PR of 4, are pumping out and compared that to the incredibly insightful pieces that I hand craft with love and present to my dozens upon dozens of readers each and every day and felt the need to rectify the situation.
Thanks to Poyla for pointing out this other PR 5 site. Again proving the quality you can expect of we proud few PR5 sites. Oh, the soothing sounds of PR5.
UDPATE: You know, I was thinking about this and had the random observation that not two days ago Google decided to put back into its index a lot of my duplicate feed content that my robots.txt file had been blocking. My supplemental index ratio went from the low 30’s to the mid 50’s one day. Annoying, but it doesn’t seem to have had any impact. I wonder if there’s just something very odd going on with Google’s indexes.

I was going to write something about this, but Scoble says everything I was going to say, but provides actual examples and evidence and whatnot:

Eh. He doesn’t actually make the case that PR is dead. He makes that case that it would be hard for Google to show you your contextual PR. But, even as that may be, one could assume that the PR Google does present you is your generally best PR for the topics you represent. Nebulous yes, but understandable and reasonable as well. I don’t know if that’s what it is, but neither does Scoble.
Beyond that he contradicts himself. First he says that PR is keyword sensitive and that it changes from search to search. Then he says that he shows up for searches that are not relevant to him, which would seem to indicate to me that his PR is uniformly high. Which is it? If it was as he said at the top of the piece, he would mainly show up for tech and geek stuff as he wants to.
Also, I deserve all the traffic I get. Dammit. :)

All of which is not to say that I think PR is accurate or an indicator of anything. I have no idea, but I’m presuming it has some value and effect since all the SEO guys use it as a metric. Those guys make their livings dealing with the engines, so if it was a pure fiction, I doubt as many bits would be devoted to figuring it out.
