As a writer, I devour anything Joss Whedon puts out, but I agree with you that the comics are a different sort of thing. Maybe its just the grumbly old curmudgeon in me that resents the fact that its not on TV.

Unfortunately, as I understand it he only wrote the first 5 (?) of that run anyway. Who knows if the replacement writers are (a) any good long term or (b) are sticking around or just filling in.

Ah.... clueless idiots. Yes, that fits the symptoms perfectly! :) Don't get me started on Firefly! They also moved the timeslot around from week to week without any notice. Ugh.
As for astonishing, I collected that run for a bit, but I'm not good enough about going to the comic store so now I'm waiting for the trade papers to come out. Heh! It was remarkably good.
Sigh. I wish I was running a network. It'd be the Joss Whedon network. Heh! One of the few directors that hasn't let me down yet (although I admit that I didn't really like the Buffy season 8 comics).

They're clueless idiots, that's why. The same reason they showed Firefly out of order then canceled it when the ratings didn't soar; the same reason that Joss and the movie studios parted ways over the Wonder Woman movie.

Do they really think *anyone* is going to go see that now? His name being attached to that project was the only thing that made it remotely interesting. You just KNOW he would have kicked ass on that script.

Yet Joss keeps (diplomatically saying) "I had one vision in mind, and the studio had another..." Read: They're morons.

You'd think they would have learned something from Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men. The X-Men fanboys whined and complained when they heard "the Buffy guy" was going to be writing their fav superheroes. I think there were even online petitions to stop him from writing (like those EVER work).

He came in and tore the series and the characters a new one, and now fans are universally saying its the best run since the Chris Claremont days.

Anyway, I digress...

Michael, everything you say I agree with. :)

Although, I guess I would argue, that both the characters and the slayage are both backdrops on the show. Which is problematic, since it makes the show kinda about nothing so far! But still.

Ray Wise and Tyler Labine are definitely both the best parts of the show (with Ray, easily in first place - no slight to Tyler, but Ray is just amazing).

Please sacrifice extra to Zorgon for me. Honestly, given Joss' track record with shows of the sort that seem to be flooding the networks this season and the overall yawwwwn that are this seasons shows - I can not imagine a single reason why all the networks aren't falling all over themselves to see who could give Joss the most money and independence to create a show for them. You know? Ugh.

Joss is the Boss. I get your comparison between the two shows, and agree with most of your points on Reaper. But still.

Buffy was hhhawesome, IMHO because the formula of big bad comes to town/research/slayage was a backdrop to the characters. The dialogue and Whedon's dead-on presentation of high-school/collage angst was perfect.

I think Reaper is entertaining, but for now, they have that part in reverse and the characters are a backdrop. Let's hope they fix that.

Still, good things about Reaper:

-Kevin Smith is listed as Consultant or something so far on every show. There are lines and some of the slaptstick comedy in every episode that I think to myself that Smith HAD to write. Let's hope his role expands, I'd love to see him writing this weekly.

- Ray Wise as the Devil: PERFECT. The guy cracks me up every time he's on the screen. "I'm not Google, Sam." Brilliant.

- Tyler Labine (Sock) is great. Some might think playing a slacker like that is easy, but keep in mind this guy played an ADA on Boston Legal for 5 episodes. Labine pulls off the dopey slacker guy perfectly with seemingly no effort at all.

I'll keep watching and hope that it overcomes some of its faults - like the whole love-interest thing. Sam should just tell her about the Soul Hunter thing already. She's already proven that she digs him and the way they've painted her character so far she probably wouldn't care.

In the meantime I'll continue my daily sacrifice to Zorgon the Space God in hopes that Joss Whedon comes back to television and brings us something new to obsess over.
