Ok. So. Heroes. All the internet has decided to give Heroes a pass due to this episode “4 months ago” and I’m pissed. Geeks always give things a pass when they desperately want to like something which has been unbearably bad and then hits a patch where it’s marginally less bad. Witness Episodes I, II and III. All unrelentingly bad, but somehow Episode III rolls around everyone’s like, “hey, it was pretty good!” or “Yeah, I hated the first two, but the third one was great!” Wrong. They all sucked, it is conceivable that the third one sucked marginally less than the first two. But that doesn’t make it good, less bad is still bad.
And with Heroes it’s the same. 4 months ago was less bad than previous episodes, granted, but the bar is so low, it’d be remarkable for it not to be. I mean, what was good about it? The acting and writing were just as bad. Just a nit, but really, Peter blows up with the force that was going to level Manhattan. Manhattan. And his clothes are fine, just a little singed and 5 seconds of falling brings him far enough away from Nathan to not incinerate him? The wonder twins’ section made them even more annoying, if that were possible. The company, again, displays abject stupidity by letting Peter so easily escape. For an all powerful company, they are remarkably, remarkably bad at this.
Peter somehow believes that being locked in a cinderblock room is good for him? He hasn’t lost his memory yet, is he just a moron? The Company realizing they are in posession of the most powerful man in the world are both mean to him and obviously keeping him jailed? Yet make it so easy for him to not take his pills?
The Haitian just locks Peter in the shipping container and doesn’t get in trouble with the Company? And then it takes the Company that long to go looking for him? Ugh. Then they go through all the trouble of saving D.L. only to have Nikki have her split personality go clubbing and D.L. magically finds her only to be shot again?? And D.L. who can instantly phase when he gets sucker punched can’t see it coming when the guy slowly walks up to him, from the front, slowly pulls out his gun and slowly places it against his chest and shoots?
I mean, I do like future Adam a heck of a lot more than feudal Japan Adam. And sexy Veronica Mars is a good addition to the cast. So there were some redeeming things to the episode, but really. Argh. Enough. Tell me what was so good about this episode? Someone. Anyone.
Sigh. Anyhow Bionic Woman. I’m guessing this show doesn’t get picked up, the ratings just are showing that people don’t love it. I totally understand – it’s a cold show and nothing really compelling about it. This last episode was better, but it still suffers from not really having a catch. It’s consistently pretty good about a lot of things, it’s a pretty good spy story, a pretty good tech story, pretty good pretty good pretty good. I still like it and think it’s got potential, I find the writing to be good and the stories interesting. They just need to get some kind of a hook – right now, alas, there isn’t.
On the other hand Reaper has been starting to happen. After the pilot, it went through a real down period where every show was the same, but the last two eps have been getting progressively better. I thoroughly enjoyed this most recent one. It still broadly followed the same formula, but there was enough additional material that really made it stand out. They still need to give Ray Wise more air time, but I will most definitely take what I can get. Of these three shows, it’s easily the one I enjoy most. If you haven’t caught it it’s worth checking out.
I’m still not watching Journeyman, which is apparently the wrong thing to do. I’ll most likely give it a shot after the seasons over.
Anyhow, what’s your take on the shows so far? Anything else I’m missing or not?
