Sprint… Sprint… Sprint. I love you but you’re killing me with this WiMax thing. Now a little more analysis of the situation paints a bleaker future for WiMax, our most reasonable hope for mobile broadband in the near future. All sorts of thoughts in that piece but I think it really kinda boils down to this one on the proposed $5billion rollout:

Companies experiencing subscriber losses and disappointing earnings usually don’t double down on new spending.

Sad…

At least the wired broadband wars are heating up. With Verizon’s FIOS rolling out their mad symmetric 20Mbps up and down service cable’s getting worried. So Comcast is talking about cranking the juice on their broadband offering to the 20-50mbps range! The problems with it are that it’s download only, you’ll still have crap upload. And, oh, right, it’s Comcast, oh they of the BitTorrent blocking. So, you know, who knows what they’ll actually let you use that big broadband for. Still, competition == good.

affordable housingAll the broadband probably isn’t going to come that cheap (relative to their less big brethren that we have now)… You’ll need to move somewhere cheaper (you know, say Williamsburg… cough. cough…), but that doesn’t have to mean uglier! Check out this proposed affordable housing (in London, sadly). I mean, normally when I hear affordable housing you think square, blocky, not all that nice. Here’s it’s got character, big windows and outdoor space? They could build that in Manhattan and, what? Oh, they did. It’s just that affordable doesn’t really enter into that picture….
