Breakfast Links: Beasties, Chimps v. College & First 100 .coms
“Beastie Boys Radio is back!!” To be honest, I didn’t even know it was gone, but I got the email yesterday so that’s good enough for me. If you’re diggin it, you ought to give a listen. Here’s the straight dope:
“It’s been a long time”
Just cause we have nothing better to do we will be doing a live radio broadcast on the www tomorrow (tue) 4-6 PM EST. Please go to www.beastieboys.com and click on the radio icon.
Just so we’re clear, it’s this afternoon. Clear? Good.
Sooo… in battle of wits, scientists have shown that chimps kick college students’ collective ass. In a computer game, sort of like Simon and concentration but with numbers at the slow end chimps tied the students for accuracy but as the pressure mounted the chimps pwnd. Watch the videos. I dig this quote:
he believes human ancestors gave up much of this skill over evolutionary time to make room in the brain for gaining language abilities.
We gave up the ability to play computer games. Curse you, evolution!! Or! Those college students tumbled in to the testing drunk and high. That’s what you do in college right?? That’s what I heard. (thanks to happyblox)
And lastly check out this list of the first 100 registered domains on the internets. It took like 2 years to register those 100. Man, those were good days… look at all those 2 and 3 letter domains! *weeps* I remember when I registered my first .com with Howard, codered.com - that was a good one. *weeps*

And I love the way they say we only use 20% of our brain, yet every time we see an animal do something better it’s because at some point we substituted that skill for another. Someone needs to evolve an office manager in there.

Hey, if we used more than some small fraction of our brain - half of the super heroes and sci-fi plots would never have come to be! I of course use 100% of my brain… it’s just that somehow I’m not smarter than everyone else… Hrmm…

How many of the students were right handed? I don’t know how much of a difference it would make but, the chimp looks to be left handed. If chimp brains work anything like human brains then he would probably be right brained and better suited than left brained people for a game like this. I wonder how he did against the few right brained people that were there? Again might not make a difference but I’m curious.

Philip! Wow, that’s a whole other level of thinking. I’m more used to the “chimps suck.” level of posting round these parts. :) There’s never enough detail in the news pieces to answer all the questions, eh?
If they were a web2.0 company, they’d put that game on the internet, get some demographic (& handedness) information about players and then let you play against the chimps virtually - letting you know how you did compared to how they did AND how you did against everyone else. And then there’d be all the interesting info!

Philip would win.
