Speed Racer and Dark Knight trailers
Well two trailers have been making their way around the nerdoweb. The first I saw (thanks to howard) was the Wachowski’s Speed Racer trailer. I don’t feel very compelled by this trailer - do you?
First of all, I still hold Matrix 2 and 3 against the brothers. They were crimes against humanity. My humanity. Then, if you’re going to stick so much to the cartoon that you put everyone in super goofy outfits to look like the cartoon - god damn it then you at least give me some techno version of the original theme song. At least! You don’t start the trailer off with the beginning of the theme song and then cut into some soulless, generic techno beat. Bitches. Everything else seemed obvious, and kinda purposely cheesy, but still, sadly cheesy. Which is to say, I think it suffers from being silly and retro but still taking itself very seriously and so very self-conscious about how cool the Wachowski’s think they are and how revolutionary they believe their movie to be.
At least Chim Chim’s still in the trunk. That’s good times. Maybe when the rendering gets better and there’s more trailers I’ll see what the hype’s about, but this trailer left me less than impressed. I don’t know about you but I think the Wachowski’s just got lucky with the Matrix.
And here’s a little teaser for the Dark Knight movie (via scifichick). It isn’t much of a trailer… and I wonder if they’re really going to show Batman beating the ccaaarrraaaaapppp out of Superman. I’ll pay my $12 just for that.
That teaser is just nasty. Balls nasty.
Ok, I don’t know what that meant, I just wanted to say it, you know, for old times sake.

My understanding (and belief) is that the new Batman has noting to do with The Dark Knight books save for the fact that its about Batman and it shares the title. If you remember really hard, this would be the third Batman movie they said is loosely based on the dark knight, albeit the firs that took its name. Just to get things back into the positive… i DO think it will be a great movie. Just not the one 20 years after batman retires or the one featuring superman is tearing the arms off of any archers.

Yeah, what Howie said. The movie is nothing (directly) to do with Miller/Jansen/Varley’s “The Dark Knight Returns.” Batman was called the Dark Knight before that particular series came out in 1986 (though you can blame it for a lot of the “dark” aesthetic that took over a lot of Batmanity including this Nolan/Bale movie series).
But if they ever do film that, they need to cast Clint Eastwood as Bats, right? And Sean Connery as the Green Arrow. Superman doesn’t age, so he’s no fun.

That Speed Racer clip sucked. I agree, it’s FAR too serious to be anything but a mockery of itself.
Ahhhh Dark Knight! I think they went with that title specificly to put distance between these movies and the movies from the 90’s. (bad guys on roller blades… booo.) Someone will do Returns one day, one can only hope they do it as close to frame by frame as possible. Even on a level of the first Superman where they got the basic tone would be amazing. Slice and Dice. Clint Eastwood? ! ? ! :) If Batman were packin heat maybe…. although in DKR I believe there is a scene where Batman sports a sniper rifle. I think they should wait until Christian Bail gets old then do the film :p Or a complete unknown.

Wait wait… so… wait… so… what you are trying to tell me is that at no point in this movie will anyone be saying “That’s nasty. Balls nasty.”? *weeps* I guess my brain just was processing all the Millermania sweeping Hollywood and assumed that a switch to Dark Knight meant Dark Knight Returns.
Good casting calls for Returns, Jason! Clint is a great one for mr. Batman and while Sean Connery begins to annoy me (and by begins, I mean, has annoyed me for innumerable moons, now) he would make a good Green Arrow. Superman doesn’t matter, although it’s critical that he gets the beating of a lifetime. :)
Yeah, the problem with the Speed Racer clip was indeed that it took itself far to seriously, despite the obvious camp involved in it. Grrr.. I like Christian Bale as a young batman, but I dunno… he might not age all craggy faced like Clint!
