Breakfast Links: Northern Lights, Ultimate & Telecoms Revolution
In a daring display of one-upsmanship scientists of the auroras borealis were not content with all the press their newer noctilucent cloud studying brethren were getting and have discovered (maybe) the source of power for these northern lights! Using satellites and magic they believe that they are caused by “comes from a stream of charged particles from the sun flowing like a current through twisted bundles of magnetic fields connecting Earth’s upper atmosphere to the sun.” which sounds totally crazy to me, but that may have something to do with the fact that I’m an idiot. They estimated the the storm powering these bad boys had the energy of a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. Huh! Now they just need to harness that crap as a source of green energy! Nice. Anyhow, the moral of the story is when scientists battle… everyone wins.
Completely unrelated to that is the launch parties for a new book… Ultimate: The Greatest Sport Ever Invented By Man. That’s right, they’re launching the book tomorrow (the 15th) in Park Slope and Midtown east. Some may know that I co-founded my high school ultimate team but was swiftly sidelined because A) I never mastered the air bounce, B) could play maybe one point before being utterly useless and C) because I mildly sucked. Nevertheless, I still say that Ultimate may be the greatest sport ever invented by man - this book looks like a winner with such nuggets as:
An organized game of catch with a Frisbee is not Ultimate.
And dressing tips like:
A backwards baseball cap means you have good throws but that you’re not always a fun person.
Word up. Don’t hate.
And lastly, hot on the heels of Nokia’s announcement that it wants to have it’s way with the telco’s, now Sony Ericsson is getting in the party! They are planning on beefing up their PlaysNow service to sell more than a million full-track songs (PlaysNow currently hooks you up with ring tones only). This flies in the face of the wishes of the telecom industry to be able to screwsell music to their clients directly. Man, all them companies must be cursing the day AT&T caved into El Jobso! They rue’d the day! Suckaz.
