More love for Perl 6
I was pretty psyched to see some good news from the Perl 6 people. It seems like steam is really picking up on that end with Perl 6 actually having a compilable binary now and Parrot coming along. It’s interesting how Perl 6 is pulling some inspiration from Haskell amongst it’s many other influences and I’m looking forward to seeing how it pans out.
I think that Perl has appeared to stagnate for awhile to outsiders, when it actually hasn’t. 5.8 was a big boost from 5.6 and 5.10 adds some really interesting new features. I love this new trend I’m seeing (and by trend, I mean 2 - FF3’s doing it to) of adding features while at the same time making it faster and with a smaller memory footprint.
And 6 looks to be as much of an improvement over 5 as 5 was to 4 (if not more so!). Which if you’ll remember from back in the day was quite an improvement. Parrot if it is well adopted by other scripting languages could prove to be an important VM. We’ll see, but it seems like there’s a bit of steam gathering around the Perl world and I am down with that.
