Facebook’s Javascript client
Huh. Just read this little bit on Facebook’s new Javascript client library. I’m not a Facebook developer, yet, but this seems like it could be quite interesting.
As I see it, the main difference would be that since this is all client side if one is already logged into Facebook then the client library could simply just work (assuming that Facebook login’s use cookies). This would one up a server side API by skipping the login step which a user would always have to do and the server app would have to subsequently manage. This way, a little widget could immediately show if a user was a logged in Facebook user on any site whereas before on each site that wanted to do something the user would have to provide their facebook login credentials. Needless to say, skipping that step is a huge win. Huge.
If the client library indeed works like this it could start a whole new wave of little Facebook widgets around the net. Whee. Just what we all needed. At any rate, I’ll be curious to see how it works. One of these days, I’ll come up with a little project to tackle, oh and some time to do the tackling. Clem, I’m looking at you. :)
