Breakfast Links: Diebold, Skull-A-Day & BLUtube
Hey! Happy Chinese New Year! This is the Year of the Rat (wood rat, as a matter of fact) which just so happens to be my year. That’s right, I’m a Rat (a water rat, if you must know). You know what that means? I’m old.
So. Diebold. It’s not like our voting machines need to be secure right? Because who would gain from tampering with our voting process? Yeah… Well, it turns out they use the same key to open up every machine they send out. Not only that, they had a picture up on their website of this singular key and it’s so simple that someone used the picture to copy the key and can now open every machine. There’s so many things wrong with this - but primarily, why the hell is there only 1 key? Also, why is the key so simple? My bike lock is way more secure than that key. These keys should be impossible to make and tracked like a … something that’s really tracked. When they give them out to people manning the booths, they should subsequently be collected. Sigh.
It’s frustration like that that drives a man to post a skull every day for a year on a blog. Ok, so it probably has nothing to do with frustration like that. But still this is s pretty impressive site. He’s making some kind of skull art work every day - and they seem non-trivial. Dig the Circuit Skull. I also quite like the Laser Skull, mostly cause it’s a neat use of long exposure.
Finally there’s BLUtube, a youtube for law enforcement officers. I like that there’s all these niche specific video sites that all have tube in their names. Godtube, for example. Anyhow, this is kinda interesting. I like this video of a K-9 graduation. Or this one… which just doesn’t seem real, but I choose to believe that it is. “Sorry ’bout that…” (via)
