So it’s been in the offing for a little bit now, but the big Tower of Toys on Avenue B is coming down and it’s parts will be given to the volunteers at the garden as mementos. It was created by a local artist Eddie Boros (who died last year) and has sat in that community garden attracting tourists and rats in equal numbers for years now. And just in case you weren’t sure, equal and large numbers.

I know as a New Yorker, it’s probably wrong to say this, but I’m kind of glad. I know, it’s all part of the homogenization of NYC and the blanding down of the East Village. I know. But that thing was nasty. Rotting toys speared onto a rotting wood structure rising 65′ or so into the air. Just because something’s unusual doesn’t mean I have to like it and dammit I don’t. There were rats all up in that structure. And it just, generally, was not appealing to me. Still it will definitely be the passing of something of an era and worth noting and being a little nostalgic over. So here’s me and my nostalgia.
