Breakfast Links: Bikers, Long Island Skiing & G. Takei’s Wedding

You know, there’s a real value in online community, especially when that online community spreads offline. This story is completely wicked awesome and a little bit of faith in humanity restoring, y’know? So this biker had his fixed gear bike, a distinctive one, stolen. (via) Step 1, immediately report all details to the online community. Step 2, report to police. Now here comes the best part. While he’s away someone spots someone riding the bike and trails him, all the while calling people for backup (in the “you got my back” sort of way as well as the “please verify this is the bike”). So, there’s tailing, then some confrontation, then some high speed car/bike pursuit and cops and finally the bike is back in it’s rightful owner’s hands! Seriously, you just don’t think this kind of thing happens.

Moving on to things that actually aren’t going to happen, we come to a developer who wants to build a huge resort complex on some old Navy land in Long Island, NY. (via) The sticking point seems to be the fact that they want to build a huge mountain to play host to an indoor ski resort! When did Long Island become Dubai?? Of course the land they want to build on has an important ecology, not the least of which is its aquifer which supplies the island its drinking water. Do developers ever actually want to develop on un-ecologically sensitive land? But the biggest weapons against them seem to be the short-eared owl and eastern tiger salamander – protected by state law. We’ll see how this goes…

And lastly something that is going to happen, but you actually can’t believe it – David sent me in this article about George Takei’s wedding! First both gentlemen will be rocking white tuxes, but the best part is that Walter “New-klee-arr Wessels” Koenig will be the best man and Nichelle “Uhura” Nichols the matron of honor! Spock’s going to be there, too… but Shatner’s probably won’t. Hah! Takei says that Shatner didn’t treat him and most of the cast very well. Well I learned that from Galaxy Quest! Good times.

  • That's what she said!
  • The more indoor skiing round these parts the better. Howie needs to practice.
