Yeah, it would be fantastic if Amazon moved to a more open format. I wonder how much the DRM is driven by Amazon and how much by the publishing industry - more so than music, I suspect that book publishers have a more legit fear of digital downloads since it's much harder (though obviously it happens) to scan in entire books. I suspect that the DRM comes from both sides. Heh.

One day I'll get around to trying one o' them digital bookshelves. Maybe Amazon'll just make it easy and automate some link between their crap and LibraryThing. That'd make my life easier!

Great points. I don't like the Kindle b/c of the DRM, but I acknowledge it's potential, and hope for a more open device at some point. I love eBooks...I read them mostly on a Nokia 770 Internet Tablet using FBReader. It really is a game-changing concept.

And I agree 100% with the comments re: AbeBooks and social book networks. Amazon does indeed buy smart...Bezos appears to be willing to invest and let things happen over time...that whole "long-term" concept that so much of Wall St. ignores. And I use both GoodReads and LibraryThing myself (I'm still trying to figure out which one to make primary)...I love specialized social networks. They come with a pre-made common interest, which makes it so much easier for me to step outside of the people I already know and make new connections.

I have the worst luck with AMZN. Every time I buy their stock the price tanks 20% afterwards. =p
