Breakfast Links: Texas, UK & Norway

Monday is for you. And Art.
Ok. In Texas…. Wait. So… Texas. Hold on. Breathe. Ok. A community in Texas recently decided that it was ok for teachers to bring their guns into their classrooms. There. I said it. The “thinking” there is that all these shootings that happen at schools around the country will soon be making their way into their community and teachers who are armed and dangerous are just the thing to prevent that. Another side effect, I suspect, will also be an increase in test scores since kids will have extra motivation to do all their homework. See? It’s a win-win! Fan-TAStic!
In another display of brilliance, in the UK the authorities have seized the board game “War on Terror” because the balaclava (a cloth hood) in the game “could be used to conceal someone’s identity.” Yup, they seized a satirical game. It’s hard to know where to start with how dumb this is, so instead I’ll leave the UK noting that they are about to begin a campaign that is going to try and get people to squeeze their butts (and other exercises!) while they are waiting for the bus. Good luck with that!
Finally, in a gesture that spans the UK and Norway, a penguin in the Edinburgh Zoo has been knighted. (via) Yup. Norway’s King Harald says this of Nils Olav, the Penguin. “[He is] in every way qualified to receive the honour and dignity of knighthood”. Hm. Well. There’s a video so you can watch this paragon of Norwegian chivalry yourself. I actually caught the end of this on the teevee the other day, but my brain could not process what it was witnessing. Good times.
