Breakfast Links: Sheriffs, Wallaby Attack & Gates and Seinfeld
Now, on the one hand you have South Carolina Sheriff Leon Lott purchasing a military armored personnel carrier complete with .50-cal machine gun - the sort of gun that shoots a lot of bullets, said bullets easily penetrating walls and cars and pretty much whatever you put in front of it. (via) He even named it the “Peacemaker”. You know, I did the exact same thing when I was 12 and playing Battletech. Huh. Anyway this is going to save lives. Somehow. And on the other hand you Lake County Sherrif Mark C. Curran Jr. who sentenced himself to a week in his own jail because he believes that spending time behind bars will make him a better cop and a better person. (via) Hopefully he won’t get shivved.
On the flip side of the world, in Australia, you have wild wallabies attacking people! The latest attack (I guess there have been a spate of wallaby attacks!) on a 9 year old boy was thwarted only by his father who got into the mix of the marsupials! I mean… that guys quote is definitely the tag line for another movie… “They’re not just friendly, cute little wallabies any more – they’re killers.” I’d pay $12 to see that flick.
Lastly, the awaited new ad campaign from Microsoft has kicked off starring Gates and Seinfeld. Without any nerdy content (except Gates himself) it’s clearly an attempt to provide Microsoft with a lovable, human face - which oddly, I guess, is going to be Gates himself. Microsoft desperately needs to connect with people on a personal level and maybe this will be just the ticket, I guess we’ll find out if they can change the once most hated man in computing to an adorable front man. Oh, and here’s the email sent out to Microsoftees about the commercial.
