Breakfast Links: Why Would You Knit That?, Phwoar & a programmer’s game

In recent years I’ve seen knitting come up in surprising places. I guess it’s cool (again?) so you’ve got all this punk rock knitting going on. Perhaps, some people shouldn’t be knitting so much – they take it to a level that maybe knitting didn’t need to be taken to. Fortunately a blog exists to bring an unblinking eye to all that – whywouldyouknitthat.com. And from only a brief perusal, yes, that is exactly the question that comes to mind – for example – when you see (and wish you hadn’t) the Vagina tissue cover. Sorry about that, but I saw it and felt that I needed to not be the only one to have had that experience.

Also… am I the only one who’s never heard the word “Phwoar“?? Granted it’s lame slang and some kinda british word as far as I can tell meaning “whooooaaa”, but with sexy overtones. Just FYI, that slang is laaame. Anyhow, it seems that that has made the cut into the OED (well the OED of Modern Slang, who knew?). (via) Apparently the OED has finally caught up to the 80’s and 90’s since they’ve also just added “stud muffin” and “arm candy”. Sigh. Although I do kinda like the Cockney slang “Britneys” for beers. That’s a good’un.

Lastly if you’re a programmer or fancy being one or are just bored you should check out this flash game – light-bot. It’s a really simple game where you “program” a little robot to turn all the lights on on a grid. Programming is simply dragging directions (straight, turn left, turn right, turn on a light, etc..) into various boxes. It’s only 12 levels and it gets pretty tricky in the last 3, pretty fun times though if you like puzzley type games. I completed it using 189 commands – I didn’t even know it was keeping count, so not sure if that’s good or not, but I’m quite sure it’s a hell of a lot better than you’re going to do.

  • Damn! Well, that's something to try for. Might have to wait for this weekend. :) I found, I think, the 11th board the most challenging. Or at least it required the most up front thought, the others I figured out as I went.

Screencap proof of 180 commands. Granted, there's probably even more room to optimize the commands for each level. I'm not sure how applicable using Functions on repetition will be for the first few levels, but it probably wouldn't hurt.
  • Why *would* you knit that?!?
