What I Did This Weekend: NY Comic Con

So I went to NYCC this weekend. I’m probably not the best person to get any deep insight into the con since I only read a few comics these days and was mostly there to mill around for awhile. My primary mission was to go and check out Bryan Lee O’Malley’s panel at the thing – which was pretty interesting. It was the third time I went to stalk see him this week (the other two being his interview at the Comic Book Club and then the signing at Rocketship).
It was good times at the panel, but you can probably get more details elsewhere. I kinda liked finding out that Michael Cera is now working out to buff up for his role as Scott Pilgrim. hee hee. I just can’t picture it. But I will. When the movie comes out. I also liked when he thanked people for coming to his panel when other panels were going on like Penny Arcade and Joss Whedon. Then brushed off the Watchmen thingy when someone shouted it out. Heh. You and me both. Not excited.
The rest of the con was good. My memory is… not good… but it seemed a lot more crowded than last year, especially for a Sunday. Anyhiz… there were a decent number of people walking around in costume, which is kind of also another reason I go. There was the whole crew of the Watchmen walking around which was pretty sweet, the Comedian was kinda the best of that bunch. There were two Baronesses in full on skin tight vinyl bodysuits who threatened to abduct one of my buddies I was with. Most of the rest were anime cosplayers that I mostly couldn’t identify. Oh there was a good Captain America there, too.
The Oni booth was good. Much to the happiness of my beloved, I’m sure, when I asked if Bryan had any original art, he said that it was unfortunately all already packed up. So another chance to spend more money on stuff was thwarted. I did learn, though, that Brandon Graham’s Multiple Warheads was merely gathering a backlog of issues so that they could launch that thing as an ongoing concern, which is pretty awesome. I hope that happens soon.
The Eos stand was well attended, heard they gave out like a billion free books. So that’s pretty awesome. I did miss my elusive friend there like 3 times. But that’s life when you’re trying to meet a big wig in the industry!
I did pick up a limited edition plush pork dumpling. No one that I know but me seems to appreciate it… but damn it… it’s #22 out of 60! 22! Yeah? Eh? Ok… I have some obsession issues, that doesn’t make it any less awesome. Moving on.
One thing that I think is not as awesome about the NYCC v. San Diego is the artists alley seems pretty tiny and there’s no self-published comics there. That one time I went to SD, there seemed to be a lot of artists pushing their own comics in various self-printed formats and that was super cool. Not so much in NY, it was mostly artists selling art, some sketches and various what not along those lines.
There also seemed to be a very huge portion of the con devoted to gaming, mostly of the electronic variety. I’m ok with that, just thought it was interesting. Since I don’t game, though, I wasn’t that excited about it but the kidz seemed to be into it.
Oh. And there were comics, too.
PS I was going to go in something that wasn’t comics related, but then basketball said I should wear my I (scott pilgrim) NY shift. Which was pretty nerdy, but I guess I just got to embrace it. I did get an “I like your shirt” at the Bedford stop in Brooklyn. So I’m just saying.
