TV Roundup: Terminator, Dollhouse & Reaper

Well, big news. More TV this week! Hoo rah. And March Sweeps begins, I think this is going to be the make or break moment for Terminator and Dollhouse. So you know, now would be a good time to get people to watch!

Terminator: Ourselves Alone

Well, I really, really enjoyed this episode. I think this show has a really strong cast. Easily, I think, my favourite part was the scene between Riley and Cameron in the farm house. I mean here’s an scene that simply is chatting, yet it’s so tense. You see Cameron’s bum hand twitching as they’re chatting and sort of the crazy, abject fear going on in Riley (who I think is on the weaker side of the casting) made for some fine, fine television.

And the showdown between Riley and the Australian lady – man, I so didn’t see that coming. That lady’s nefarious, let me tell you. She’s got mechanations, I don’t think they’re going to turn out for the best.

In fact there’s very little I didn’t really enjoy about this ep. One thing that felt a little disappointing, though, was the complete lack of reference to any of the first 3 episodes and what they meant. I hope they will be more resolved in the upcoming days – not a ton of time, but something to connect them to the show – as it is, it seems like a completely separate sub-story that makes Sarah 100% better and out of the looney looney zone she was in, but sort of out of the blue.

In general, I like where this story is going. Setting up Cameron as having some real non-straightforward, non-terminatory things going on in her noggin. She’s got some mechanations going, too. I mean, is that kill button pendant really a kill button pendant? Or just something to engender greater trust. What’s up with her twitchy multiple bird killing arms? I’m just saying, enquiring minds want to know.

Dollhouse: Gray Hour

I really liked this episode, too. Not as much as Terminator, but it was a good solid ep. I grow to like Topher more – I mean, I don’t like him want to hang out with him, but his character is fun and interesting, I hope he continues to get more screen time. Same with Ms. Dewitt – she should get more screen time. Joss is bringing in a little more mystery on that front with the “parent company” which clearly puts DeWitt on edge – shades of Wolfram & Hart and their senior partners from Angel, but hopefully less demonic. Heh.

I like that there’s all these invisible hands doing crazy stuff – Alpha messing around with everyone (presumably, he’s Helo’s contact – sending him that picture of Echo). The Dollhouse sending Victor to send Helo in circles (ok, what’s his name? Ballard?). And the parent company apparently having some sort of motive unbeknownst to us tv watching folk.

Not to mention Echo and Sierra’s burgeoning memory in their tabula rasa states. I think there’s no shortage of interesting things happening in front of and behind the scenes. I’ll say that the whole art thing was a little ham fisted in the show, I mean, all of a sudden this dieing computer guy is like a sensitive art guy, too? That scene made me feel funny, too. But overall I quite enjoyed the episode.

Reaper: A New Hope

I mean you gotta give them props for a Star Wars reference right in the title. :) This show continues to be good. Good, light fare. I mean, I could watch Sock and Ray Wise all freaking day, it’s so captivating. I think they’re clearly going to be moving beyond the escaped soul of the week format that they mostly clung to last season, which is nothing but good.

So you know… I like this show lots. It’s got a good cast, although I’m sad to see the DMV lady go. Ah well. So what’d you think of these past episodes? Awesome? Or crap?

I have to agree with your Terminator review. I think this show is very strong and i wish more people were watching it now. I WANT to love Dollhouse but honestly, at this point i could take it or leave it. I love Whedon so much that im clearly gonna hang in there and see what he delivers. Reaper was great stuff. Very early-buffy-like still. And the intro of the two new characters were nothing but good (hot-stepsister and got-out-of-contract-boy.) I hope they have a strong showrunner that can get them out of this episodic mire and give us a good story arc with real growth. thats the only thing the show lacks.
