Breakfast Links: Foiled Bank Robbery, Brazil & Vampire Population

So it’s almost April Fools day, a day of great, great, great annoyance on the internets, in general it is best to stay off the internets during this day. A Scottish bank is thankful for it, though, as a robbery was foiled by a gentleman who assumed it was an April Fools prank!

Mr Stewart calmly walked up to the robber and said: “It’s April the 1st isn’t it mate? It’s April Fool’s Day”.

When Davidson said to him “I’ve got a gun I will shoot you”, Andrew replied “go on then shoot me” and grabbed the bag from his hands. He opened it in front of staff and after seeing it was empty sat down and carried on reading his paper

Come on! It doesn’t even make sense, if you assumed it was an April Fool’s prank wouldn’t you be more proud of yourself for calling it? Than just sitting down and going back to read your paper? Something’s fishy about that, doesn’t smell right.

On the other hand, one can only hope that this Reuter’s piece is an April Fool’s on the world. But apparently Brazilian politicians, having seen one of the best Parkour movies of our times – District B13 (or Banlieu 13 if you’re from Europa) – took great inspirition from that movie and have decided that they too would like to wall off their slums. They’re building almost 7 miles of walls around 19 communities! Subsequently, police will stop venturing into these areas and their inhabitants will discover extreme running skills that will serve them well when the Brazilian government “accidentally” loses a bomb in one of them…

Finally, we come to vampires. This blogger looks into how to model a vampire population and concludes that there could, in fact, be no hidden population in real life because it would either die off or explode. But my own science suggests otherwise, she doesn’t take into account that vampires have a pretty good incentive not to procreate – for the exact reasons she accounts for – there’d be less food to go around. And on the flip side, given that they can procreate instantly – in the event of populations dwindling, they can increase their numbers as much as they want. And in most of the movies I watch, there’s like some rigid hierarchy of vamps controlling everything. So you know, you can’t argue with my science.
