8 Movies I’m looking forward to, Summer 2009 Edition

Well summer blockbuster time is coming on strong and it turns out there’s no shortage of movies I want to see. Word up. You can see my movie picks from 2008 and I figured why not see what’s to be seen this year. I’m not counting Star Trek (which I just reviewed) and Wolverine, which I have yet to see (although I want to), since they’re out already. So here’s the ones I want to see – in order of what I think are their release dates.

1. Terminator Salvation, McG, May 21st [trailer]
Oh. YEAH. I haven’t been a huge fan of the franchise, loved the 1st, thought the second was meh and didn’t even see the third. I think the Sarah Connor Chronicles rekindled my interest and the trailers look awesome. Plus, I have a soft spot in my heart for McG and this seems like just the movie he’d do well.

2. Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, Michael Bay, June 26th [trailer]
I mean… it’s the summer, right? Big, fighting robots are synonymous with summer as far as I’m concerned. I enjoyed the first and while I’m not a big fan of Shia, there’s still Megan. Plus Bumblebee, and really, that part of the trailer where Optimus Prime transforms and grabs on to that big guy? Yeah. Summer!

3. Public Enemies, Michael Mann, July 1st [trailer]
I dunno, I like Johnny Depp. I am getting tired of Christian Bale. I guess I just like a good 20’s or 30’s gangster movie. I can’t help it.

4. Brüno, Dan Mazer, July 10th [trailer]
I liked the Borat movie and dammit, I think that this ones going to be funnier from all the little bits I’ve heard about it during its filming. Maybe I’ve been watching too much Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model and I really want to see them get theirs.

5. Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince, David Yates, July 15th [trailer]
I guess I gotta see this. I mean, I’ve seen all the rest. I’m not a big Harry Potter fan, only read the 1st book, but the movies are good and have been getting better and I figure I’ve seen so many already… Plus Basketball’s a big fan (weird, right??) so it’s in the cards.

6. G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Stephen Sommers, August 7th [trailer]
GI Joe and Transformers in one summer? It’s like it’s 3pm on a school day and I’m 10 years old! Aw, hell yeah!

7. Ponyo, Miyazaki, August 14th [trailer]
I didn’t even know about this, but apparently this is latest by Miyazaki is headed to US shores this summer and by golly, I’m going to see it! I don’t really know much about it, but it’s making me want to go and watch Nausicaä again. (thanks to Diana for pointing this out to me!)

8. 9, Shane Acker, September 9th [trailer]
Tim Burton is only signed on as a producer, but the movie looks like it’s something he’d do. It looks intensely awesome. I’m not really clear what it’s about, nor why animated sack dolls are the only things left, but I sure do want to find out why.

So those are the 8 I’m most looking forward to. I want to point out that despite a movie called G-Force coming out – somehow that isn’t a remake of the old anime and is some other stupid movie about guinea pigs. I mean, what? Bleah.

Anything I missed? What’re you looking forward to seeing?

  • Yeah, I dunno, I'm not too interested in Up. I dunno. Same with Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs - although that does have the benefit of 3D, which might lure me back in. PE and HP, are both on my list and I'm excited for them. As for Inglourious Basterds... I dunno, I hate Tarantino so much, but I like Brad and the movie looks funnyish... I'm conflicted on that one.
  • Crap! I totally forgot about District 9. Wait were you the person that emailed that around? Yeah, I definitely want to see that, too. Man, it's going to be a good summer. :)
  • District 9 also looks incredibly rad http://www.apple.com/trailers/...
  • I got some additions to this list:

Pixar's Up...this movie might end up being great. http://www.aceshowbiz.com/spec...

Riding on that animation tail - 'cloudy with a chance of meatballs' i'm REALLY looking forward to, http://www.cloudywithachanceof...

Michael Mann's Public Enemies (that dude just does it right) http://www.aceshowbiz.com/spec...

Harry Potter - yeah, yeah, yeah...but I still think the movies rock. http://www.aceshowbiz.com/spec...

and lastly, but certainly not least, mr. tarantino's Inglourious Bastards http://www.aceshowbiz.com/spec...

  • re: Funny People, oh yeah! I forgot about that one, yeah I'm going to see it. The trailer makes me a little worried... I'm not sure how I feel about Apatow and Sandler together, although I kinda like that Jason Schwartzman is in it. It seems a little too, I need to win an oscar'y from the trailer. We'll see, he hasn't let me down yet. :)

    As for 1, 2 and 6... we'll see what you see.... :)
  • basketball
    Funny People - Judd Apatow
1,2 and 6: I'm not seeing with you
