Breakfast Links: Burn Armed Robbers, High Line Opened & George Alec Effinger

Man alive! You do not want to be an armed robber in Guinea. They just suggested to Guinean citizens that they’re having a sort of problem with full prisons so to help out and do their part they should burn any armed robbers they catch in the act. They should burn them. Because their prison’s are full. Oddly, it’s a military junta running the country and it’s soldiers that are mostly committing these armed robberies. So it’s the military telling citizens to burn soldiers to death. I’m just saying. Probably not a great place to visit either.

In more uplifting news, the High Line has actually opened in NYC! A government work opening a day ahead of schedule? Has such a thing ever happened? I’m pretty excited about this – it’s a really cool idea and I hope it lives up to the hype. Have to go and check it out this weekend. Anyone already been there?

Finally, since I’m all in an 80’s sf/f mode – what with me already close to 3/5’s done with the Belgariad, I came across this three part post about another favourite of mine – George Alec Effinger (part 2, part 3). (via) It’s a very sad read. Those books were kick ass – a real gritty and cool take on Cyberpunk that felt very fresh at a time where there was a crap load of derivative crap (that I also read and enjoyed) on the market. I re-read When Gravity Fails a few years ago… but now, I guess I’m going to have it read it again (after I plow through the rest of the Belgariad and the Mallorean).

Golden Gryphon Press (goldengryphon.com) is having a 2-for-1 sale until June 23: Buy one title and get a second of equal or lesser value for free. (I don't believe there is a charge for shipping, either.)

You can use this sale opportunity to purchase the three George Alec Effinger collections I edited for Golden Gryphon: Budayeen Nights, Live! From Planet Earth, and A Thousand Deaths. The first collection, Budayeen Nights, is also available in a trade paperback edition; all three titles are available in archival-quality hardcovers. (Note: I edited these books for Golden Gryphon between 2001 and 2007; I am no longer associated with the Press and make no income from the sale of these books.)

    Enjoy.
